My work centers around the structure of a human being. The way ribs, vertebrae, and hips protrude, how the curves fall, and how easily a human body bends and can be manipulated has always intrigued me. In this day and age, the human body is overly sexualized especially for women. My personal goal with both my paintings and photographs is to highlight how beautiful every aspect of the body is, even when twisted in unorthodox ways.
There is a certain satisfaction yet vulnerability when nude, and I hope to embody and emphasize this in my work by playing with the fluidity and expressiveness of the human body. I intentionally cut off the heads of the bodies I paint and photograph, to show that one can still convey emotions even without a face. I enjoy experimenting with how the subtlest artistic choice can transform my headless bodies into figures bursting with anger, wrecked with mourning, or ripe with frustration. When I start my painting process I won’t ignore my emotions or tune out my personal issues in order to solely focus on my work as some do. In order for my pieces to be successful, I harbor every emotion I’m feeling in the moment and throw them into my paint mix so that every stroke is encompassed with not just my ideas, but who I am in that specific moment. There's a certain dance to my visual work exclusively. Every brush stroke is intentional, and I've found that dancing wildly while painting empowers me and inspires my artistic process. The finished product is especially rewarding due to this process, because not only did I put my time and energy into it, but I used pieces of myself and emotions I might not necessarily enjoy to create something complete, something beautiful, and most importantly something I’m proud of. Art is my world, consumes my thoughts, my passion, and what I am made of. |
